Kill Devil Hills

first in flight

The largest town of the Outer Banks by population, Kill Devil Hills is still the laid back vibe that visitors desire while visiting the island. It is also home to the site of one of the most important pieces of human history, where man took flight for the first time. The Wright Brothers National Memorial sits high atop a hill next to the field where Wilbur and Orville Wright, along with the help of many locals, put the Wright Flyer on its inaugural set of flights. You can explore the Memorial as well as the visitor center located on the grounds that houses replicas of their powered glider. If you're looking for a great place to watch the sunset, we recommend you catch it on the top of the Memorial's hill at least once while you're in town. Once you've taken a step back in time, head over to Avalon Fishing Pier to catch your dinner or to grab a drink while you take in the awesome views of Kill Devil Hill's beach. Not ready to catch and clean your own dinner? The town is full of fish markets for you to grab fresh seafood to make at your rental home.
